We all know that athletes make a ton of money. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck earned one of the richest contracts in the NFL in 2016 receiving over $120,000 for five years total with $87,000 guaranteed. Retired Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter would earn an insane $35 million every year. And let’s not forget to mention Barcelona star Lionel Messi who is the highest paid soccer player in the world, earning a base salary of $41.7 million and receiving an additional $30 million through endorsements.
These top athletes have made a name for themselves in their respective sport. And whether you agree with the crazy amount of money they make or not, these athletes are living large and loving every minute of it. Besides ranking the top NFL players or soccer stars, we shouldn’t leave out another great sport: the National Hockey League. These talented men know how to work their way around an ice rink and they also know how to take a punch, literally. But do you know who tops the list as the richest NHL player?
Canadian born professional hockey player and captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins Sidney Crosby tops the list of the NHL’s highest-paid players. Including endorsement deals, Crosby has the highest annual salary in the NHL at $12.7 million. This may sound dismal compared to an NBA player’s salary, but basketball has a smaller roster and all of its ratings are based on a few star athletes. This is also true in the world of football, where salaries are sky high because the National Football League brings in higher revenue. According to Forbes, the annual rate for a star NFL quarterback now starts at a whopping $18 million. However, Crosby is making a pretty decent living in the NHL and we don’ think anyone would complain about receiving a annual salary of over $12 million.
The Penguin star has had a history of head injuries, but he is still raking in the dough. The NHL star earns $4 million alone on endorsement deals with brands like Reebok, Tim Hortons, Bell Canada, and Gatorade. In September 2015, Crosby signed a seven-year deal with Adidas, which is reportedly worth as much as $1.5 million per year. Adidas is also on the move to replace Reebok as the NHL’s uniform provider, starting in the 2017-18 season, so it was perfect timing for the hockey star. Adidas president Mark King even praised Crosby in a statement: “There’s no one like Sidney in the game. His creativity on the ice and ability to score, particularly in clutch situations, is unmatched. He’s an iconic athlete who transcends his sport and will go down as one of the best ever to play. He’s a leader on the ice and a fan favorite. He also happens to be a really great guy.”
When Crosby first entered the league in 2005, he signed an endorsement deal with Reebok. However, back in 2010, it was announced that the star athlete would sign the richest endorsement deal in the league’s history with the sports apparel brand. Crosby was reportedly paid $1.4 million a year for five to seven years.
Besides all of his endorsement deals, Crosby is overall a really good hockey player and it’s no wonder why he earns as much money as he does. Crosby was the first player picked in the 2005 NHL Draft, and in the eleven seasons he has played for the Penguins, he has been the face of the team. His accomplishments include leading not only the Penguins, but also the NHL league in goals and points; he has won a Hart Trophy as a regular season MVP, and took the Penguins to two Stanley Cup Finals. Crosby’s other accomplishments also include two Gold Medals for Team Canada in the Winter Olympics of Vancouver in 2010, and Sochi in 2014.
With a net worth of $30 million, it’s safe to say that Sidney Crosby is by far one of the best players in the NHL. With one of the largest salaries in the league and a bunch of endorsement deals, Crosby has made a name for himself in professional hockey.
